Jatropha Curcas: the future leading plant for biodiesel ?

So it seems. This peculiar plant grows effortlessly in extremely hot climates and on arid soils without fertilizers. Up until 97% of oil is extracted from its seeds. Furthermore, it blossoms one year after the sowing time thus producing 500 kg of seeds per hectare and increasing its production by ten times in 3 years. Since biodiesel seems to become more and more relevant for environmental protection and financial reasons, it is understandable why investments in Jatropha crops are been intensified in many areas of the world, in particular in most disadvantaged areas. Kenya, for instance, has recently started to welcome International investors that are interested in this business by allocating 100,000 to one million hectares to Jatropha fields. Interested foreign companies can rely on the “Investment Promotion Act” which requires a minimum investment amounting to 500,000$ and the replacement of own technicians with local highly-qualified technicians. The cost pro hectare amounts to 3-6 €. The first large-scale commercial operation in this country was launched by a Japanese company with an initial investment of more that 13 million dollars, which, as the company stated, is just a start.

Crude Degummed Jatropha Oil

Degumming is the process of removal of gums from crude oil, in which they are dissolved. There are two types of gums; hydratable and non-hydratable. Hydratable gums can be removed from oil by hot water treatment. Oil contains non-hydratable gums required to give phosphoric acid treatment for removal of gums.

Neutralised  Neutralisation is intended mainly for deacidifying crude fatty oils or degummed oils. By treatment of the oil with alkali (normally caustic lye) the alkali will neutralise the free fatty acids contained in the oil and form soapstock. The soapstock is heavier than oil and can be removed from the oil by centrifugal separation. Raw oil is neutralized in Short mix Plant and controlled the process parameters. Most often the crude oil is pretreated with acid for removal of gums.
